TAX GUIDELINES
Once you have started your business, you must comply with the local, state, and federal tax laws. The following list provides you tips on what the law might expect you to do.
1. Federal Taxes
- Payroll Tax deposits on monthly or semi-weekly basis depending on the amount of your tax liability in a given period. For new businesses, it is always monthly until they have built history for what is called a “look back” period of Four quarters.
- Payroll tax returns on quarterly and annual basis.
- Federal income tax return on annual basis.
- Federal estimated income tax payment, if required.
2. State Taxes
- Payroll tax payments (State unemployment and/or state income tax withholding) on monthly and quarterly basis.
- Payroll tax returns on quarterly basis.
- Sales & Use Tax, monthly or quarterly, if required.
- State Franchise Tax Return on annual basis.
- State income tax return on annual basis, if required.
3. Local Taxes
- Local income tax, if applicable. Some cities have local income tax on business income.
- Sales & Use Tax, filed and paid with state taxes.
- Property Tax, if your business owns business property in that state, you may be subject to property tax by the Independent School District, the County government, and other local government units.
